Thanks to the launch of the iPhone last Friday in Belgium, mobile internet has become a hot topic. The three mobile operators in Belgium each have their own fees to welcome mobile surfers. T-zine gives a clear overview (in Dutch) .

Ik vind die mobile data prijzen zo slecht nog niet hoor. Toch niet als je bekijk hoezeer dat het leven van een gepassioneerde webgebruiker verrijkt. Het “always connected” of evernet idee wordt dan pas realiteit. (tenminste, zolang je batterij meegaat)
Nota bene: dit is gepost via een peperduur proximus internet everywhere abonement, en ik vind het elke eurocent waard)

EUR 30 for 2 gigs isn’t that bad, if it wouldn’t be for the fact that it does not include any voice (Mobistar).
That said, competition is good and will, eventually (hopefully?), push the prices down.

@steffest: inderdaad, al bij al vallen de prijzen goed mee. Vooral ook omdat elke operator op een ander soort publiek mikt. Nu nog iets aan die batterijen doen 😉
@kerim satirli: guess I was very concentrated (was doing my first tweet via the iPhone) and maybe a little bit sad because the iPhone wasn’t mine 😉 Have you already bought one? And what about the fees in Holland?

I am currently in the US and still battling with myself if I should get one or not. I love Pocket PCs too much to get one right now and what’s more: I dislike T-Mobile.
For what its worth, the iPhone 3Gs are sold out in the Netherlands now anyway, so I would have to wait.
Plenty of time to think and consider the different options.

@kerim satirli: hmm, those options don’t seem very interesting…I quite support the fact that the Belgian legislation doesn’t allow so-called ‘koppelverkoop’, in other words offering a phone with an obligatory subscription to an operator. It’s good in my eyes that you can just buy the iPhone (for a pretty high price) but that you’re then free to choose the fee that fits you best, from the operator of your choice. Belgian legislation isn’t that bad I guess. They want to change that legislation however.

Dorien, I totally agree with you on the point that the Dutch prices are pretty ridiculous.
The iPhone is a nice device, no doubt, but at the prices it can be had for these days, I wonder why some MNOs even dare to call it “subsidized”, because, it clearly is not.
However, for what it is worth, if my current Pocket PC would be failing, I would just go to Hasselt again, get myself an iPhone and be done with it 😉

Een inwoner van Neder-over-Heembeek, die een formule van mobiel internet bij Proximus had, heeft een factuur ontvangen van 18.888 euro voor drie dagen surfen in Spanje, waar de prijs 9,68 euro per megabyte bedraagt. In België voorzag de internetformule van de Brusselaar 50 euro per gigabyte.
Proximus deed een commerciële geste en bracht de factuur terug tot 1.400 euro. Dat is het bedrag dat de Brusselaar voor hetzelfde gebruik, maar met een abonnement, betaald zou hebben.
Het Europees consumentenbureau stelt dergelijke bedragen in Spanje aan de kaak.

@sven: ik weet niet vanwaar je het nieuws hebt, maar gisteren was exact deze case op het vrt-journaal. Goed dus dat ze de mensen duidelijk maken dat de tarieven in het buitenland anders liggen. En heel erg goed voor de Brusselse surfer dat Proximus hem niet de hele boterham heeft laten betalen!! Kvraag me af of mensen die dit nog aan de hand gaan hebben, ook een ‘korting’ krijgen. En nog beter is natuurlijk dat het Europees consumentenbureau zich hiermee bezig houdt. Ik denk in elk geval twee keer na vanaf nu als ik mijn GSM erbij neem in het buitenland!

Belgium mobile internet prices not expensive ? Are you kidding me. I travel alot between the UK, NYC and Belgium for business and I can tell you the Belgian people are being ripped off. There is a reason why your 3G penetration is only 3%. 100 mb of data will cost a Belgian with a proximus contract about 60 Euros not to mention the cost / Mb when you go over your forfait. (Mobistar is even more expensive)
My UK sim card costs me less than 20£ a month with 600 calling minutes included, free calls to the same operator, free unlimited texts AND 150 Mb of data transfer included.
I make my calls through skype when I am abroad and it saves me quite a bit of money. Ironicly a Belgian making calls through skype would probably end up paying more than using the mobile network due to the rediculous 3G prices.
