If you ask me, the 8th edition of the Belgian Girl Geek Dinner was the best till now.
A vibrant location, lovely people with all kinds of intrests, and great gadgets.

- As for the location: there was a great art project going on in Vooruit: Almost Cinema 08. If you are in Ghent these days, there’s no excuse to skip it. Moreover, it’s for free. I also tried the ‘Think To Me’-box (5 euro). Nobody wanted to tell me in advance what it was all about. I’m not going to tell you either. But it’s really worthwile.
- As for the vibrant people: there were the ‘old faces’, the ‘very old faces’ (people I used to study with), and the new faces – at least for me. Like rrradiogirrrl, Nathalie of LBi, Anne of TenderFeelings and artist Jan Leenders, who made my Twit2Art.
I’m heading to Ghent today, for the 8th edition of the Belgian Girl Geek Dinner. For the second time, I take a so-called ‘sacoche’ with me. Translated that means ‘handbag’, which refers to the guy a girl can take with her.
For the first edition of the Girl Geek Dinner, Maarten Schenk was my ‘sacoche’, for this edition Hannes Couvreur will accompany me. I met Hannes during my journalism studies a few years ago, we lost contact a bit, and are now back on track because our intrests have somehow developed in a similar way. Web 2.0, creativity, blogging,… Things we both follow and bring into practice.
Theme of the Girl Geek Dinner is Art and technology, with Eric Joris (performance group Crew) and Eva De Groote (Almost Cinema festival) as speakers. Also Jan Leenders, the Belgian artist who made my wonderful Twit2Art, will be there. The next Girl Geek Dinner will be hosted in my hometown Hasselt by the way.
In a former entry I promised to tell more about a great Twitter-initiative. As a matter of fact, it’s very simple, yet amazing. It brings the virtual Twitter world to the ‘real’ world, a bit like twunch does.
As you know Twitter is a micro-blogging system in which people send messages to their friends and contacts. They report about what they are eating, about great websites they discovered, about their lives in general,…
Well, the Belgian artist Jan Leenders came up with a great idea: send me a tweet and I’ll make an artwork of it. The first one who jumps on the initiative pays 1 euro, the second one 2 euros,…And so on. I am number 34, which means I paid 34 euro for my twitter art. Jan has finished his 20th piece of art at the moment so I am patiently waiting for the result. For an overview of his work till now, visit the Twit2Art website.
The text I chose?
Yes, I admit it. I stole the text. From Heather Nova, one of my favourite artists. It’s great to have something virtual transformed into something touchable. And I really wonder what my grandchildren will think about this in 50 years. Will they laugh about the way we used technology? Will they understand? At any case, the piece of art will always remind me of my ‘Twitter-period’. “Yes, yes, your grandma used to Twitter” 😉
Update: in the meantime I received an email from artist Jan thanking me. Because of this blog post the Online Journalism Blog jumped on the story and ordered a 36th piece of art. Great!!
